  • A Neurologically-Informed Explanatory Case Study for EmRes®

An explanatory case study exploring somatic quieting, emotional regulation, and the possible neurological mechanisms involved in reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms. A Neurologically-Informed Explanatory Case Study for EmRes® This case study explores how somatic quieting may support emotional regulation by working with body sensations, interoception, and nervous system response. It presents a neurological perspective on how emotional distress may shift when the body is guided toward a calmer state. View Study Findings Download the PDF Understanding Somatic Quieting Somatic quieting is described as a process where emotions calm through the nervous system, rather than through active control of thoughts or behavior. The study explains how emotional responses may become connected to body sensations, and how awareness of those sensations may support emotional regulation. How the Body and Brain May Process Emotional Response The study discusses how emotional experiences may involve multiple brain and body systems, including interoception, the autonomic nervous system, the insula, amygdala, hypothalamus, hippocampus, anterior cingulate, and prefrontal cortex. Rather than focusing only on conscious thought, this approach looks at how the body’s sensory signals may contribute to emotional patterns and how those patterns may change over time. Passive Emotional Regulation How emotions may calm without active cognitive control. Interoception and Body Awareness How awareness of body sensations may support emotional processing. Neurological Pathways How the insula, amygdala, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and related systems may be involved. A Case Example Involving Anxiety and Depression The study follows a clinical case involving a client with symptoms of depression and anxiety. The intervention used a somatic quieting approach, where the client was guided to notice body sensations without trying to control or force emotional change. This case was used to explore how emotional intensity may reduce as the nervous system responds to sensory awareness and regulation. Working With Sensations Instead of Forcing Emotional Control The intervention emphasizes awareness of body sensations as they naturally shift. Instead of asking the client to analyze or suppress emotions, the process guides attention toward what is happening physically in the body. Observed Changes in Emotional Symptoms The case study reports changes in depression, anxiety, and stress scores after the treatment process. It also describes how the client became more aware of body sensations and experienced a reduction in emotional intensity during the sessions. Depression Reduction in reported symptoms Anxiety Improvement from initial assessment Stress Lower post-treatment score What This May Suggest About Emotional Regulation The study suggests that emotional experiences may change when attention is brought to body-based sensations connected to distress. It also raises the possibility that somatic quieting may help the nervous system move toward calm without relying only on conscious emotional control. Further research is needed to better understand how this process works and how it may support anxiety, depression, and other emotional conditions. • Interoception and Emotional Resolution | Emotional Health Institute

Learn about interoception and its role in Emotional Resolution with the Emotional Health Institute. Discover how understanding and enhancing interoception—our awareness of internal body sensations—can improve emotional well-being, help resolve disruptive patterns, and foster resilience. Explore our training sessions and resources on EmRes for a deeper connection to emotional health. Interoception and Emotional Health Understanding the Body’s Role in Emotion What happens in your body when you feel anxious, afraid, angry, or overwhelmed? You might notice tightness in your chest, a knot in your stomach, changes in your breathing, warmth in your face, trembling, pressure in your throat, or a shift in your heartbeat. These internal bodily sensations are closely connected to our emotional experiences—and our ability to perceive them is known as interoception. What Is Interoception? Interoception is the nervous system’s process of sensing, interpreting, and integrating signals originating from within the body. These signals provide the brain with ongoing information about the body’s internal state, including changes related to heart rate, breathing, temperature, digestion, muscle tension, and other physiological processes. Interoception plays an important role in maintaining the body’s internal balance, but research also increasingly recognizes its relationship with emotion and emotional health. Emotions are not simply thoughts occurring in the brain. They involve continuous interactions between the brain and body. The sensations we experience during fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, excitement, and other emotional states are part of this ongoing communication. Interoception and Emotions Contemporary neuroscience has moved beyond the idea that emotions are generated by a single “emotional center” in the brain. Emotional experiences emerge through distributed brain networks interacting with sensory information, previous experience, context, and signals coming from within the body. Interoception provides an important window into this process. When an emotional response occurs, changes throughout the body may be experienced as sensations: constriction, pressure, heat, movement, trembling, changes in breathing, increased heart rate, or sensations in the abdomen, chest, throat, and other areas. Usually, our attention quickly shifts toward the meaning of the emotion: Why am I anxious? Why did this upset me? How can I make this feeling stop? Emotional Resolution® (EmRes®) takes a different approach. Interoception and Emotional Resolution® EmRes uses the direct perception of bodily sensations as a pathway toward the resolution of recurring emotional patterns. Rather than analyzing the story associated with an emotion, attempting to control the response, or deliberately replacing it with a more positive state, EmRes invites attention toward the physical sensations that are present when the emotional response is activated. This process, which we call Viscero-Somatic Quieting™, involves perceiving internal sensations without attempting to interpret, modify, intensify, or suppress them. As attention remains with the sensory experience, the sensations naturally evolve. They may move, change in intensity or quality, and eventually subside. The objective is not emotional regulation in the conventional sense. EmRes is based on the possibility that, under appropriate conditions, the body can complete an emotional sensory response without conscious intervention. Developing a Different Relationship With Emotion Interoceptive awareness can help us recognize that an emotion is not only a thought, story, or psychological interpretation. It is also an embodied experience. EmRes builds upon this fundamental connection between interoception, bodily sensations, and emotions. By learning to experience these sensations without immediately trying to control or explain them, we can develop a fundamentally different relationship with difficult emotions—one centered not simply on managing emotional responses, but on supporting their natural capacity for resolution. At the Emotional Health Institute, we teach Emotional Resolution® to individuals, health professionals, educators, parents, and practitioners seeking practical tools for working with recurring emotional difficulties.
