Explore our training sessions and resources on EmRes for a deeper connection to emotional health. Interoception and Emotional Health Understanding the Body’s Role in Emotion What happens in your body when you feel anxious, afraid, angry, or overwhelmed? You might notice tightness in your chest, a knot in your stomach, changes in your breathing, warmth in your face, trembling, pressure in your throat, or a shift in your heartbeat. These internal bodily sensations are closely connected to our emotional experiences—and our ability to perceive them is known as interoception. What Is Interoception? Interoception is the nervous system’s process of sensing, interpreting, and integrating signals originating from within the body. These signals provide the brain with ongoing information about the body’s internal state, including changes related to heart rate, breathing, temperature, digestion, muscle tension, and other physiological processes. Interoception plays an important role in maintaining the body’s internal balance, but research also increasingly recognizes its relationship with emotion and emotional health. Emotions are not simply thoughts occurring in the brain. They involve continuous interactions between the brain and body. The sensations we experience during fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, excitement, and other emotional states are part of this ongoing communication. Interoception and Emotions Contemporary neuroscience has moved beyond the idea that emotions are generated by a single “emotional center” in the brain. Emotional experiences emerge through distributed brain networks interacting with sensory information, previous experience, context, and signals coming from within the body. Interoception provides an important window into this process. When an emotional response occurs, changes throughout the body may be experienced as sensations: constriction, pressure, heat, movement, trembling, changes in breathing, increased heart rate, or sensations in the abdomen, chest, throat, and other areas. Usually, our attention quickly shifts toward the meaning of the emotion: Why am I anxious? Why did this upset me? How can I make this feeling stop? Emotional Resolution® (EmRes®) takes a different approach. Interoception and Emotional Resolution® EmRes uses the direct perception of bodily sensations as a pathway toward the resolution of recurring emotional patterns. Rather than analyzing the story associated with an emotion, attempting to control the response, or deliberately replacing it with a more positive state, EmRes invites attention toward the physical sensations that are present when the emotional response is activated. This process, which we call Viscero-Somatic Quieting™, involves perceiving internal sensations without attempting to interpret, modify, intensify, or suppress them. As attention remains with the sensory experience, the sensations naturally evolve. They may move, change in intensity or quality, and eventually subside. The objective is not emotional regulation in the conventional sense. EmRes is based on the possibility that, under appropriate conditions, the body can complete an emotional sensory response without conscious intervention. Developing a Different Relationship With Emotion Interoceptive awareness can help us recognize that an emotion is not only a thought, story, or psychological interpretation. It is also an embodied experience. EmRes builds upon this fundamental connection between interoception, bodily sensations, and emotions. By learning to experience these sensations without immediately trying to control or explain them, we can develop a fundamentally different relationship with difficult emotions—one centered not simply on managing emotional responses, but on supporting their natural capacity for resolution. At the Emotional Health Institute, we teach Emotional Resolution® to individuals, health professionals, educators, parents, and practitioners seeking practical tools for working with recurring emotional difficulties. • EmotionalResolutionAugust2019 | EmotionalHealthInst

Emotional Resolution is a way to leave the burdens of negative emotional patterns behind permanently. Find out how the Emotional Health Institute can help you. Emotional Resolution Viscero-somatic Quieting™ At the base of Emotional Resolution® or EmRes® is a precise process which we call viscero-somatic quieting®. What is EmRes®? Our body keeps somatic traces of all our traumatic experiences. When exposed to a stimulus that reminds the body of a past danger, the viscero-somatic memory linked to this danger is reactivated, creating the base of a disruptive emotional reactions . It is a prediction from our brain. EmRes® helps the body recognize that the perceived danger is nowadays obsolete. EmRes® allows the body to integrate traumatic information and to tune-in to our current reality instead of reacting through a past memory. To do this, we commit to experiencing the viscero-somatic response, without controlling our physical sensations or our environment, until viscero-somatic quieting™. How does EmRes® Work? EmRes® connects you to the origin of a difficult emotion through your physical sensations and modulates the unwanted emotional reaction permanently. This simple yet rarely used physiologic capacity is innate to all human beings. Our certified practitioners can apply EmRes® during a session or at the moment of an emotional resurfacing and lead you through the viscero-somatic quieting™process. Putting EmRes® into Perspective. Most of us live our lives with an awareness of the burden negative emotional patterns create for us. Some of us try self-help, others turn to professional help, still others self-medicate. The burden may get intermittently lighter, but it stays with us and resurfaces with the next trigger. This leads to disruptive emotional patterns: anger, stress, jealousy, phobias, anxiety, shame, avoidance, to name a few. We are here to tell you that it does not have to be this way. The body is wired to permanently resolve dysfunctional and negative emotional patterns... if we only allow it to go through a natural process without any interference. Our body has an innate biological capacity for self-emotional resolution. From the understanding of how the body constructs emotions, several protocols were designed by the Emotional Health Institute to naturally release disruptive emotional patterns and long-lasting trauma. Our certified practitioners can apply EmRes® during a session or at the moment of an emotional resurfacing. What Is An Emotion? There are numerous theories about the origin and modulation of emotions. Until not so long ago, one unifying concept to all of these theories was that emotions are generated in subcortical brain centers in response to external stimuli. As early as the 1880’s, William James and Carl Lange posited their theory of emotion, in which they outlined how external stimuli elicit a set of physical responses which are processed by higher cognitive functions to yield an emotion. Subsequent works by neuropsychologists, such as James Papez, further expanded on this theory, implicating the "limbic system"—the hypothalamus, anterior thalamic nucleus, hippocampus, and the cingulate gyrus—in creating affect, which was then processed by the cortical brain to produce behaviors or emotional symptoms. Contemporary work by Antonio Damasio incorporates the notion that sensory responses are at the core of emotions . In his “Somatic Marker Hypothesis”, Dr. Damasio describes somatic markers as the body’s sensory responses to external stimuli or circumstances. It is these somatic markers, he explains, that comprise an emotion. More recent work by Lisa Feldman Barrett illustrates that subcortical regions are not the sole origin of emotion they were once thought to be, but rather that emotions are constructed by the whole brain. Dr. Barrett's perspective, which she lays out in How Emotions Are Made , is that emotions emerge from multiple ingredients, including information from the brain, body, external circumstances and past experiences, and are not directly caused by any one thing. The Emotional Health Institute's focus, viscero-somatic quieting, functions by connecting subcortically generated markers to higher cognitive functions in order to neutralize or integrate disruptive emotional responses and associated behavioral patterns. See the Origin of Emotional Resolution® Interoception: A door to Emotional Resolution® Interoception is contemporarily defined as the sense of the internal state of the body. This can be both conscious and non-conscious . It is the sum of all the physical sensations from our internal organs, tissues, hormonal signals, immune and inflammatory responses, and other processes in the body triggered by stimuli. Emotions are crafted as our brain interprets this interoceptive data through our personal lens of personality, culture, and experience. Interoception constitutes an entrance door to the origin of our emotional difficulties. Interoceptive awareness during an emotional difficulty offers a door to the resolution of disruptive emotional patterns. The precise process we are using, which we call viscero-somatic quieting™, serves as the base of Emotional Resolution®. Viscero-somatic quieting™ connects you to the origin of an emotion through your physical sensations and modulates the unwanted emotional response permanently. Where do these physical sensations come from? From the current understanding of neuroscience, these sensations are predictions of the brain, based on past highly stressful experiences. In her theory of how emotions are constructed, Lisa Feldman Barrett explains that “in every waking moment, your brain uses past experience, organized as concepts, to guide your actions and give your sensations meaning. When the concepts involved are emotion concepts, your brain constructs instances of emotion.” EmRes® allows the brain to update outdated predictions by consciously observing the obsolete interoceptive prediction from a safe, present-day perspective.

  • Trauma Treatment with Emotional Resolution | Emotional Health Institute

Find effective trauma treatment with Emotional Health Institute's Emotional Resolution (EmRes) approach. Our certified practitioners in San Francisco offer personalized sessions to resolve trauma and relieve emotional stress through somatic quieting. Discover how EmRes can help you achieve lasting emotional healing and resilience. Trauma Treatment A Body-Centered Approach to Trauma-Related Emotional Responses Traumatic experiences can continue to influence how we respond to situations long after the original event has passed. A sound, a place, an interaction, a sensation, or sometimes something we cannot consciously identify may trigger fear, anxiety, anger, distress, or a powerful physical reaction even when we are presently safe. Trauma can affect people in many different ways, and established approaches to trauma treatment include trauma-focused psychotherapies and, when appropriate, medical or psychiatric care. The type of support that is appropriate depends on the individual, their symptoms, history, circumstances, and needs. Emotional Resolution® (EmRes®) offers a complementary, body-centered approach to recurring emotional responses, including some that may be associated with past difficult or traumatic experiences. Trauma, Emotions, and the Body An emotional response is not experienced only through thoughts and memories. It also involves changes throughout the body. Fear or distress may be accompanied by constriction in the chest or throat, changes in breathing or heart rate, trembling, sensations in the abdomen, muscular tension, heat, pressure, or other internal sensations. The perception of signals originating from within the body is known as interoception, and it plays an important role in emotional experience. EmRes works directly with this sensory dimension of emotion. Working Without Revisiting the Traumatic Story A distinctive aspect of Emotional Resolution® is that the person does not necessarily need to describe, analyze, or deliberately revisit the events associated with an emotional difficulty. Instead, EmRes focuses on the physical sensations that arise when the emotional response is activated. Through a process called Viscero-Somatic Quieting™, attention is gently directed toward these internal bodily sensations without attempting to interpret, suppress, control, or change them. The sensory experience is allowed to unfold naturally as sensations evolve and subside. When this process reaches completion, the recurring emotional response associated with a particular trigger may lose some or all of its automatic intensity. The aim is not to erase memories or replace “negative” emotions with positive ones. Difficult experiences remain part of a person's history. Emotional Resolution® instead focuses on the involuntary emotional response that can continue to be activated in the present. Emotional Resolution® and Trauma-Informed Care Working with trauma requires particular care. Emotional Resolution® should not be understood as a replacement for trauma-focused psychotherapy, psychiatric care, medical treatment, or other professional support when these are needed. The Emotional Health Institute trains practitioners to use EmRes within the appropriate boundaries of their professional roles and emphasizes an approach that does not require people to disclose or repeatedly recount traumatic experiences in order to work with the emotional response. For individuals experiencing severe or persistent trauma-related symptoms, PTSD, dissociation, thoughts of self-harm, or other significant mental health concerns, evaluation and support from an appropriately licensed healthcare or mental health professional are important.
